Remembering Andrea Merrell: A Life of Selflessness and Bravery
Andrea Merrell was a shining example of courage and compassion, always putting the safety of others before her own, according to those who knew and loved her. The 43-year-old North Branch woman tragically lost her life after being attacked by a patient during her Christmas Day shift as a security guard at M Health Fairview Hospital in Wyoming, Minnesota.
Merrell had worked at the hospital since April and also held a position in loss prevention at a Cambridge Fleet Farm since 2021. Her friends, Heather Miller and Pam Heaton, described her as “one of the kindest and most selfless people” they had ever known, with a lifelong commitment to helping and protecting others. “Helping and serving others was simply who she was,” they said in a joint statement.

A Life of Friendship and Community
Merrell’s friends and acquaintances remember her as a kind and generous person who always put others first. She met her friends Heather Miller and Pam Heaton in a high school band class 30 years ago in Chisago City, and the three had been “inseparable” since then. Friend Troy Schmidt described Merrell as “tough, brave, and selfless,” saying she “gave so much to others” and was “one in a million.”
Merrell also had a special place in her heart for animals, particularly her three cats, whom she treated like children. She also showed kindness and care to her friends’ children, treating them like her own. Cassi Lorey, whose father dated Merrell several years ago, remembered her as a “very special person” who showed her “grace, love, kindness, and care” from the day they met.
A Tragic Loss and Legacy
Merrell’s death has left a profound impact on her community and loved ones. Authorities reported that she was attacked by a patient, Jonathan Chet Winch, 35, of Chisago City, who allegedly told police, “I didn’t mean to hurt her.” Winch has been charged with one count of second-degree murder and is being held in lieu of $2 million bail.
An online fundraiser in Merrell’s honor has raised over $8,200 as of Saturday afternoon. Her memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 11, at the Lindstrom Community Center at 13292 Sylvan Ave. in Lindstrom. As her friends and family remember her, they carry with them a million happy memories, but acknowledge that life will never be the same without her. For more information, visit Here
