Golden Globe Awards Telecast Sees 7% Decline in Viewership

The 83rd Golden Globe Awards, which aired on CBS, experienced a 7% decline in viewership compared to last year’s show, according to Nielsen data. The event, hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser at the Beverly Hilton, averaged 8.66 million viewers. This marks the second consecutive year of declining viewership for the Golden Globe Awards, which had 9.2 million viewers in 2025 and 9.4 million viewers in 2024.

Impact of Changing Viewer Habits and Past Controversies

The decline in viewership can be attributed to the changing habits of viewers, who are increasingly turning to social media for clips and highlights from awards shows. The Golden Globe Awards have also faced challenges in recent years, including a scandal over the lack of diversity in the membership of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which operated the event for decades. A Los Angeles Times investigation in 2021 raised concerns about the organization’s ethics and financial practices.

The 83rd Golden Globe Awards may have also been affected by some production elements that did not resonate with viewers. The pairing of Marc Malkin, senior culture and events editor for Variety, and “Entertainment Tonight” co-host Kevin Frazier to provide commentary during the show was met with criticism on social media. Viewers also expressed dissatisfaction with on-screen graphics featuring data from the prediction market app Polymarket, which showed the win probability of nominees ahead of their categories.

Viewer Reactions and Criticisms

Viewers took to social media to express their disappointment with the commentary and graphics, with one viewer comparing Malkin’s commentary to “your mom talking about who she just ran into at the supermarket.” Film critic Dustin Putman also criticized the commentary, writing, “Do you think Golden Globes commentators Marc Malkin and Kevin Frazier are going to go home tonight utterly haunted for the rest of their days over the mind-numbing inanities they uttered all night?” Sports podcaster Bobby Wagner also expressed his frustration with the graphics, writing, “Just push me in front of a bus at this point.”

The Golden Globe Awards’ partnership with Polymarket, which included an advertising buy on the broadcast, may have also contributed to the negative reaction from viewers. The data from Polymarket was intended to provide an additional layer of engagement and excitement to the show, but it ultimately fell flat with audiences.
