Fatal Multi-Vehicle Crash in Pennsylvania Amidst Whiteout Conditions
A tragic incident occurred on Interstate 79 in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, where a man lost his life in a multi-vehicle crash on Thursday. According to the Pennsylvania State Police, the accident happened at approximately 11:45 am at the 121 mile marker, with whiteout conditions and snow on the road contributing to the incident.
The crash involved a semi-trailer that was stopped in the right lane due to stopped traffic, which was then struck by another semi-trailer from behind. A third vehicle subsequently collided with the rear end of the second semi-trailer, resulting in significant damage to the front end and driver’s side of the third vehicle.
The driver of the third vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene by the Mercer County Coroner’s Office. The driver of the second semi-trailer was transported to a local hospital for treatment of unknown injuries. The two semis sustained moderate damage, while the third vehicle suffered major damage.
Importance of Safe Driving in Winter Conditions
The National Weather Service reminds drivers to exercise caution when driving in snow, as 70% of injuries related to ice and snow occur in automobiles. It is essential to take it slow and be aware of the road conditions to avoid accidents.
