Mel Brooks: A Legendary Career and Life Explored in New HBO Documentary

Hollywood legend Mel Brooks is the subject of the new HBO documentary “Mel Brooks: The 99 Year Old Man!” The documentary, co-directed by Michael Bonfiglio and Judd Apatow, explores Brooks’ life and legendary career, including his marriage to “The Graduate” star Anne Bancroft, his humble beginnings, and his iconic movies such as “Young Frankenstein,” “Blazing Saddles,” and “Robin Hood: Men in Tights.”

According to Bonfiglio, one of the most surprising aspects of working with Brooks was his quick wit and comic instincts, which remain sharp even at 99 years old. The documentary features interviews with Brooks himself, as well as industry legends such as Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller, and Dave Chappelle, and includes posthumous interviews with David Lynch and Rob Reiner.

A Tribute to David Lynch and Rob Reiner

David Lynch, who passed away in 2025, credited Brooks with saving his career after the success of his 1980 film “The Elephant Man,” which Brooks executive produced. Lynch made an exception to his “no more interviews” rule to participate in the documentary, citing his love and respect for Brooks. The documentary also features an interview with Rob Reiner, who was murdered in 2024, in which he reminisces about Brooks’ close bond with his father, Carl Reiner.

Bonfiglio and Apatow decided not to edit Reiner’s segments after his death, choosing instead to leave them as a tribute to their friendship and the Reiner family. The documentary premieres in two parts on HBO, on Thursday, January 22, and Friday, January 23, and is a must-see for fans of Mel Brooks and comedy legends.

Experience, Expertise, and Authoritativeness

The documentary is a testament to Brooks’ enduring legacy and influence on the comedy world. With a career spanning over six decades, Brooks has worked with some of the biggest names in the industry, and his impact can still be felt today. The documentary features interviews with industry experts and legends, providing a unique perspective on Brooks’ life and career.
