Major January Storm to Bring Ice, Sleet, and Snow to Large Swath of the US
A powerful winter storm is expected to hit the US in January, bringing with it a mix of ice, sleet, and snow that will affect a large corridor of the country, from the Rockies to Maine. According to Alex Lamers, a meteorologist with the Weather Prediction Center, the outlook for the storm has remained fairly consistent over the past few days, with widespread areas projected to receive nearly a foot of snow. However, as with any weather forecast, caution is still warranted, as tiny changes in the storm’s track can result in significant variations in precipitation amounts and types.
The Northeast is expected to be particularly hard hit, with forecasts calling for 12 to 18 inches of snow, although totals may vary locally and be lower along the immediate coast. Mr. Lamers noted the potential for a “slowly pivoting snow band” to set up over the region, which could result in localized areas receiving two feet or more of snow. This would be a significant amount of snow, even for areas that are used to heavy snowfall during the winter months.
Widespread Snow and Ice Forecast
From Oklahoma into Ohio, a large area could receive snow in excess of 12 inches, which would be a rare amount for a single storm in those regions. The ice forecast has also been widespread, with as little as a quarter-inch of ice capable of causing hazardous conditions. According to Caitlin Dirks, a meteorologist in Memphis, “Freezing rain is the most dangerous precipitation type, as it sticks to things, accumulates on top of itself, and adds thousands of pounds of weight to anything it hits.” This can lead to significant disruptions to travel and daily life, as well as increased risk of accidents and injuries.
Much of the nation will also experience freezing temperatures, with subzero lows forecast from the Northern Plains through the Northeast. This bitterly cold air is expected to reach as far south as the Gulf Coast, and forecasters are warning that long-standing temperature records could be broken. The National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings and advisories for many areas, and residents are advised to take necessary precautions to stay safe and warm during the storm.
Preparations and Safety Measures
As the storm approaches, residents in affected areas are advised to stock up on supplies, including food, water, and medications, in case they are unable to leave their homes. It is also important to have a plan in place in case of a power outage, including a backup power source and a way to stay warm. The American Red Cross and other organizations are also providing tips and resources for staying safe during the storm, including information on how to prevent hypothermia and frostbite.
For the latest updates and forecasts, residents can check the National Weather Service website or mobile app, which provides up-to-date information on weather conditions and forecasts. Additionally, many news outlets and weather websites are providing live updates and coverage of the storm, including the latest developments and information on any disruptions or closures.
