Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass Condemns Fatal Shooting of 37-Year-Old Man by U.S. Border Patrol Agent
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has strongly condemned the fatal shooting of a 37-year-old man by a U.S. Border Patrol agent in Minneapolis, marking the second such death in the city this month involving U.S. immigration officers. The incident has sparked widespread outrage and calls for action from local and national leaders.
Mayor Bass Demands Removal of Federal Agents from Minneapolis
Mayor Bass issued a statement on Saturday, saying, “This morning we learned of yet another tragic shooting in Minneapolis at the hands of federal agents. This violence has to stop and the president must remove these armed, federal forces from Minneapolis and other American cities.” She also referenced ongoing legal action, stating that she and other mayors are taking steps in federal court to “stop the Trump administration’s unconstitutional and unlawful deployment of federal agents in the Twin Cities.”
The Los Angeles County Republican Party has cautioned against rushing to judgment in the case, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation to determine the facts. The party’s chairman noted, “In the aftermath of any officer-involved shooting, it’s essential to figure out what happened, which often is not possible to ascertain immediately. We were not present at the scene of this regrettable incident in Minneapolis, and neither was Mayor Karen Bass.”
Community Reaction and Protests
Assemblyman Mark Gonzalez, D-Los Angeles, has also spoken out against the shooting, stating, “SHAME ON ICE. Where there should be protection, there is only the echo of gunfire. Where there should be justice, there is only another name taken too soon.” A demonstration and vigil were held on Olvera Street in Los Angeles, with around 200-300 protesters in attendance. Another protest was scheduled at the Federal Building in downtown Los Angeles.
The incident has raised concerns about the use of force by federal agents and the need for greater accountability and transparency. As the investigation into the shooting continues, community leaders and residents are calling for an end to the militarized presence of federal agents in their cities.
