Sydney Sweeney’s Hollywood Sign Stunt Sparks Controversy
Actor Sydney Sweeney recently made headlines after being captured on video scaling the H of the Hollywood sign to hang up bras as part of a promotion for her upcoming lingerie line. However, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has stated that the stunt was not authorized, sparking controversy over the use of the iconic landmark for commercial purposes.
The footage, obtained by TMZ, shows Sweeney climbing up the sign to string up a clothesline of assorted bras, accompanied by a small crew filming her handiwork. While the team obtained a general permit to film in the area from FilmLA, they did not obtain the necessary clearance or pay the required licensing fee to film the sign itself.
Unauthorized Use of the Hollywood Sign
The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce owns the intellectual property rights to the sign, which is managed by the nonprofit Hollywood Sign Trust. According to the chamber’s chief, Steve Nissen, “Anyone intending to use and/or access the Hollywood Sign for commercial purposes must obtain a license or permission from the Hollywood Chamber to do so.” Nissen stated that the production involving Sweeney was not authorized and that the chamber did not grant a license or permission for the stunt.
The incident has raised questions about the use of the Hollywood sign for commercial purposes and the need for proper authorization. The sign, built in 1923, was donated to the city 21 years later and is considered a cultural landmark. Climbing or altering the sign are not permitted and have resulted in trespassing charges and arrests in the past.
Previous Incidents and Controversies
This is not the first time the Hollywood sign has been the site of unauthorized stunts or controversies. In the past, the sign has been altered to read “Hollyweed” and “Caltech,” and individuals have been arrested for trespassing and vandalism. Sweeney herself has faced backlash for previous promotional activities, including a jeans ad campaign that sparked controversy.
Representatives for Sweeney did not respond to requests for comment on the incident. The Los Angeles Police Department has not filed a police report, but the incident may still be subject to review and potential charges.
