The economy of Anguilla, a small British territory in the Caribbean, has long relied on a steady flow of tourism. However, in recent years, the island has discovered a new source of revenue, one that is tied to its unique internet domain, “.ai”. This domain has become a lucrative asset, with companies and individuals spending millions to secure websites with the sought-after extension.
According to a 2024 report from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Anguilla generated 87 million East Caribbean dollars ($32 million) in annual revenue from .ai domain names in 2023. This accounted for 20 percent of the government’s revenue for the year, making it a significant contributor to the island’s economy. In comparison, tourism makes up around 37 percent of Anguilla’s GDP.

The Rise of .ai Domain Names
The number of .ai domain names has been rising steadily, with 881,715 registered as of this month, compared to 40,600 in January 2020, according to Domain Name Stat, a domain-tracking website. This surge in demand has led Anguilla to partner with Identity Digital, a firm specializing in domain registrations, to manage its digital goldmine. Vincent Cate, a computer scientist who managed Anguilla’s domain name for decades, notes that the growth of .ai domain names has been “extra fast” since the release of ChatGPT.
Anguilla is not the first nation to profit from its web extension. Other countries, such as Tuvalu, Montenegro, and the Federated States of Micronesia, have also earned revenue from their unique domain names. However, the .ai domain has become particularly valuable due to the growing interest in artificial intelligence.
Sustainability of Anguilla’s New Revenue Stream
While the growth of .ai domain names shows no signs of slowing, officials are cautious not to rely solely on this revenue stream. Ellis Webster, Anguilla’s premier, notes that “our financial planning cannot solely rely on the revenues from the .ai domain name registrations” due to the ever-changing digital landscape. However, the renewal rate of .ai domains, which is around 90 percent after two years, provides a predictable cushion for the island’s economy.
The proceeds from .ai registrations are set to fund local projects, including expanding the airport, supporting elder health care, and strengthening the island’s technology vocational center. With the island’s population totaling less than 20,000, the revenue from .ai domain names is a significant windfall. As Cate notes, “everybody renews their domains, and so there’s sort of a certain level you can just count on.” This predictable revenue stream has led to optimism about the future of Anguilla’s economy.
