Tom Brady Shines in Flag Football Showcase, But Team USA Dominates
Tom Brady, the seven-time Super Bowl champion, made a strong impression in his first competitive football game in over 1,000 days, throwing a perfect touchdown pass to Stefon Diggs in the corner of the end zone on his first play. The 48-year-old quarterback showed off his elusive skills, evading a sack on a free rush and delivering a strike for the touchdown after replacing Jalen Hurts on fourth and goal on the opening drive of the game.
A Strong Start, But Ultimately a Disappointing Outcome
Brady’s team, the Founders FFC, coached by Sean Payton, got off to a great start, with Brady throwing another beautiful pass to his longtime friend and former teammate Rob Gronkowski for the two-point conversion, giving them an 8-0 lead over the USA squad in the Fanatics Flag Football Classic. However, things took a turn for the worse when Gronk went down with a hamstring injury, and Brady’s team couldn’t keep up with Team USA’s dominant performance.
Team USA crushed the Founders FFC 43-16, and also dismantled Joe Burrow’s Wildcats FFC squad 39-16. The Wildcats then eliminated the Founders from the round-robin tournament with a 34-26 victory. Despite a few highlights from Brady, including calling his own version of the “Philly Special” and tossing a touchdown pass to Hurts against the national team, his team’s dismal performance was a disappointment.
Team USA’s Mastery of Flag Football
It was clear that the NFL players and coaches were learning the game and the rules on the fly, having held only a couple of practices before the five-on-five tournament. Team USA’s sophistication on offense and overall speed overwhelmed the group of players who barely practiced together. The national team’s mastery of flag football was evident, as they scored on every possession, except for a kneel-down at the end of one victory.
The event, which was originally scheduled to take place at Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, but was relocated to BMO Stadium in Los Angeles due to the Iran war, showcased the talent and dedication of the Team USA squad. With flag football set to make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Games, many NFL players have expressed interest in playing for gold, but the USA squad’s performance demonstrated that they are the ones to beat.
