Record-Breaking Powerball Jackpot: $1.8 Billion Up for Grabs

The latest Powerball drawing has taken place, with the winning numbers announced as 11, 23, 44, 61, 62, and a Powerball of 17. This estimated $1.8 billion jackpot is the second-largest prize in the game’s history, with a staggering cash value of $826.4 million. As the top prize continues to climb, lottery enthusiasts are on the edge of their seats, awaiting news of a potential winner.

History of Powerball Jackpots

Powerball has a rich history, spanning 33 years, with six jackpots exceeding $1 billion. The current jackpot has been growing since the last winner was announced on May 31, when a single ticket in California claimed a $204.5 million jackpot with a cash value of $91.6 million. This year alone, the jackpot has been hit four times, with the previous record holder being a $1.326 billion jackpot won in Oregon in April 2024.

Playing Responsibly and Supporting Good Causes

As the jackpot continues to rise, Matt Strawn, Powerball Product Group Chair and Iowa Lottery CEO, encourages players to “play responsibly and take pride in knowing that every $2 ticket also helps support good causes in their community.” This reminder highlights the importance of responsible gaming practices while also acknowledging the positive impact of lottery ticket sales on local communities.

Winning Options and Odds

A single jackpot winner would have the option to choose between a lump sum payment of $826.4 million or an annuity, consisting of one immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments that increase by 5% each year. However, the odds of winning the top prize are steep, at 1 in 292.2 million, according to Powerball. Drawings take place every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 11 p.m. ET, giving players multiple chances to test their luck.

A Look Back at Powerball’s Largest Jackpot

In 2022, a single ticket sold in Altadena, California, claimed a record-breaking $2.04 billion jackpot, the largest in both Powerball and lottery history. With Powerball tickets sold in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and costing $2 each, the game has become a staple of American gaming culture.
