Minnesota Takes a Stand Against Federal Limits on Vaccine Access
Gov. Tim Walz issued an executive order on Monday to “safeguard” vaccine access in Minnesota, joining other Democratic-led states in breaking with restrictive eligibility policies unveiled by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on the newly approved COVID-19 vaccines for the fall season. This move comes as a response to the FDA’s limitations on who can receive the COVID-19 vaccine, which has sparked debate across the country.
The order also pushes back against what Walz said was a “misinformation campaign” led by U.S. Secretary of Health Robert F. Kennedy Jr. “questioning the effectiveness and utility of vaccines.” Such doubts have recently led Republicans in Florida to take steps to be the first state to eliminate school vaccine mandates, raising concerns about the potential consequences for public health.
Executive Order Directs Health Department to Remove Barriers to Vaccine Access
Walz’s executive order directed Minnesota’s Department of Health “to continue to identify, review, and remove barriers to vaccine access to the fullest extent permitted by law” and to issue a standing order to health care providers for the COVID-19 vaccine. This move aims to ensure that Minnesotans have access to the vaccine, regardless of their health status or age.
“Vaccines are one of the greatest public health achievements in modern medicine,” Walz said in the order. “While the Trump Administration attempts to limit Americans’ access to preventative care, Minnesota will be guided by science and medical expertise, prioritizing the health and safety of our people.” The order also highlights the importance of vaccines in preventing the spread of infectious diseases, citing the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s estimate that roughly 4 million deaths are prevented annually worldwide by childhood vaccinations.
Other Democratic-Led States Take Similar Measures
Minnesota is not alone in its efforts to expand vaccine access. Other Democratic-led states, including Massachusetts, Colorado, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, and Washington, have taken similar steps to ensure that their residents have access to vaccines. Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey, for example, ordered health insurers in the state to continue covering the COVID-19 vaccine, while Colorado and other states have issued orders allowing pharmacies to continue providing shots.
The Democratic governors in Washington, Oregon, and California have also announced an alliance to establish their own recommendations for who should receive vaccines, based on science-based evidence from respected national medical organizations. This move is seen as a way to counter the FDA’s restrictive policies and ensure that vaccines are available to those who need them most.
