Charlie Kirk Shooting: Arrest Made in Connection with Conservative Activist’s Death

A suspect has been taken into custody in connection with the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk in Utah, according to officials. Utah Governor Spencer Cox identified the suspect as 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, who resides in Southern Utah. Robinson’s arrest came after his father recognized him in photos released by authorities and encouraged him to turn himself in.

According to two federal law enforcement sources, Robinson’s father saw the photos and confronted his son, who admitted to being the person in the images. However, Robinson initially refused to surrender, stating that he would rather die by suicide than turn himself in. His father then contacted a youth pastor close to the family, who helped to calm Robinson down and eventually called the U.S. Marshals Service. The Marshals arrived and detained Robinson, who was later taken into custody by the FBI.

Circumstances Surrounding the Shooting

Charlie Kirk, 31, was shot and killed while participating in a debate at Utah Valley University on Wednesday afternoon. The event was part of Turning Point USA’s “The American Comeback Tour,” and over 3,000 people were in attendance. Kirk was struck in the neck by a single bullet, which was believed to have been fired from the roof of the Losee Center for Student Success.

Investigators recovered a high-powered, bolt-action rifle that they believe was used in the assassination. The gun was found wrapped in a dark towel in a wooded area where the shooter fled. Additionally, messages on the messaging platform Discord from a person named “Tyler” referenced a rifle wrapped in a towel that was left in the woods, as well as engravings on bullets.

Evidence and Investigation

The investigation into Kirk’s death is ongoing, but officials have released some details about the evidence they have found. The casings of the fired bullet and three unfired ones contained inscriptions, including “Notices bulges OwO what’s this?”, “Hey fascist, catch!”, and “oh bella ciao, bella cio, bella ciao, ciao, ciao.” Utah Governor Spencer Cox declined to speculate on the meaning of the inscriptions, but noted that the “Hey fascist, catch!” inscription “speaks for itself.”

Kirk was a close ally of former President Donald Trump and a friend of Donald Trump Jr. The president ordered flags to be flown at half-staff until Sunday evening and announced plans to honor Kirk with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, calling him “a giant of his generation, a champion of liberty, and an inspiration to millions and millions of people.”
