Minneapolis Suburbs Grapple with Fear and Violence Amid Political Assassinations
BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. — The nation is reeling from the recent assassination of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk, and the Minneapolis suburb of Brooklyn Park is no exception. Two candidates, Ruth Bittner and Xp Lee, are campaigning for a legislative seat left vacant by the fatal home-invasion assassination of Rep. Melissa Hortman, a Democrat who served as Minnesota’s House speaker. The troubling trend of political violence has become a clear concern in the community, with voters set to head to the polls on Tuesday to fill the state House seat.
Hortman, her husband, and their dog were killed on June 14 in their Brooklyn Park home in what investigators believe was a politically motivated attack. Vance Boelter, 57, faces federal and state murder charges in the Hortmans’ deaths, as well as attempted murder and other charges in the shooting of another Democratic Minnesota lawmaker, Sen. John Hoffman, and his wife, Yvette, who both survived. The incident has left the community on edge, with many residents expressing fear and concern about the rising tide of political violence.
Fear and Uncertainty in the Community
The Republican candidate, Ruth Bittner, has noticed that people in the neighborhood where Hortman was killed seem afraid to open their doors. “We are in very, very scary times, and we definitely need to get out of this trajectory that we’re on here,” Bittner said. The political violence, particularly following the killing of Kirk, has briefly given her pause about running for public office. However, she believes that “we can’t cower” and must move forward to address the issue.
Xp Lee, a Democrat and former Brooklyn Park City Council member, has also experienced the fear and uncertainty in the community. “It’s definitely come up, you know, folks have referenced the recent shootings, Annunciation and Charlie Kirk,” Lee said. “Just yesterday, I was outdoor knocking, a couple of people mentioned it.” Lee knew Hortman personally and often saw her walking her dog in the neighborhood. He believes that the best way to honor her memory is to go to the Capitol and do his best in the seat.
A Call to Action Against Political Violence
The assassination of Kirk has drawn condemnation from across the political spectrum, with federal officials announcing that Tyler Robinson was taken into custody. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz denounced the act, stating that “in America, we don’t settle our differences with violence or at gunpoint.” The Hoffmans, who were shot and wounded in June, also issued a statement denouncing Kirk’s death and calling for leaders to tone down their rhetoric and address extreme and violent dialogue.
Lee described the political climate as a “charged atmosphere” and expressed his desire to bring down the level of tension. He supports a ban on semiautomatic automatic weapons and high-capacity magazines, citing the need to address the root causes of political violence. As the community continues to grapple with fear and uncertainty, the candidates are urging residents to come together and find a way to move forward.
