Western States Unite to Provide Vaccine Recommendations Amidst Federal Controversy
The West Coast Health Alliance, comprising California, Oregon, Washington, and Hawaii, has released joint recommendations for vaccinations against seasonal respiratory viruses, including the flu and COVID-19. This move comes amidst concerns that the Trump administration has compromised public health by politicizing the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
According to the alliance, the Trump administration’s actions have jeopardized the CDC’s credibility and undermined trust in public health agencies. The states’ recommendations are based on scientific research and align with those of major medical organizations. They suggest that all residents over 6 months old should receive a flu vaccine, and all babies should be protected against RSV.
COVID-19 Vaccine Recommendations
The alliance recommends that the following groups receive the COVID-19 vaccine: children between 6 months and 23 months old, adults over 65, individuals with risk factors or those in contact with people with risk factors, pregnant women or those planning a pregnancy, and anyone who chooses to be protected. These recommendations are designed to provide clarity and guidance amidst the controversy surrounding federal vaccine policies.
The U.S. Health Secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., has been criticized for his anti-vaccine stance and his decision to fire the entire 17-member CDC panel, replacing it with a new group that includes several anti-vaccine voices. Former CDC chief Susan Monarez was also fired after refusing to sign off on changes to the childhood vaccination schedule without sufficient data to support the changes.
