The stage is set for an exciting weekend of girls volleyball in Las Vegas as the top teams from Southern California gather for the 30th Durango Classic. The tournament, which will be played at four sites starting Friday, will feature seven of MaxPreps’ top 10 teams nationally, including Sierra Canyon, Mater Dei, Redondo Union, Marymount, and Mira Costa. This prestigious event is a highly anticipated fixture in the high school sports calendar, attracting the best teams from across the region.
Redondo Union, one of the participating teams, is coming off a strong performance, having swept El Segundo in three close sets. The Sea Hawks, now 13-3 overall and 2-0 in league play, are seeded sixth overall in the tournament and are looking to make a statement. As tweeted by the RUHS Varsity Girls VB team, “Sea Hawks go on the road and sweep in 3 close sets against a scrappy El Segundo squad. Redondo moves to 13-3, 2-0 league. Teams Strengthened by New Additions
Sierra Canyon, currently ranked No. 1 in the Southern Section power rankings, will be looking to build on their recent success, having knocked off Redondo Union last week. This tournament will also be one of the first opportunities to see teams that have been strengthened by players who had to sit out the first half of the season after transferring without moving. The sit-out period ended on September 13, allowing these players to now participate with their new teams.
