Rebuilding from the Rubble: A Story of Resilience and Creativity

Last September, Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The storm’s impact was felt as far as the Appalachian Mountains, where homes near Asheville, North Carolina, were demolished by heavy rains and strong winds. For Leicester resident John Saunby, the devastation was a harsh reality, but it also presented an opportunity to rebuild and create something new.

Saunby, who has a history of home construction, was inspired to salvage materials from the debris left by the hurricane. He retrieved porch posts from the wilderness and found kitchen floorboards inside an old cotton mill, giving new life to items that would have otherwise been discarded. As he worked on his project, Saunby realized that the woods were indeed “full of treasure,” and he was determined to make the most of it.

A Dream House Born from Destruction

The materials Saunby salvaged from the woods have helped him build his dream house, a project that showcases his creativity and resourcefulness. With features like Black Locust bark siding and tree trunks supporting the roof, the house is a testament to Saunby’s vision and skill. As he approaches the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Helene’s landfall, Saunby is now on the hunt for Wormy Chesnut lumber, a rare and prized wood that will add the final touch to his masterpiece.

Saunby’s partner, Jenny Kimmel, an Appalachian recording artist, has been a source of inspiration and support throughout the project. As he builds, Kimmel strums her guitar and serenades, bringing a sense of joy and creativity to the process. For Kimmel, the house is more than just a physical structure – it’s a reflection of the soul of the world, and she’s grateful to be a part of it.

A Collaboration of Love and Art

The partnership between Saunby and Kimmel is a beautiful example of how creativity and collaboration can come together to create something truly special. As Saunby works on his “last hurrah” of home-building, Kimmel’s music and spirit bring a sense of life and energy to the project. The result is a house that is not only a testament to Saunby’s skill and craftsmanship but also a reflection of the love and art that has gone into its creation.
