Duluth Man Charged with Fatally Shooting Mother as She Slept
A man from Duluth, Minnesota, has been charged with the deliberate murder of his 74-year-old mother, Mae Dean Davin, after allegedly shooting her in the face while she slept in her recliner. Nathan Douglas Davin, 46, was arrested and charged on Tuesday with the murder, which occurred on Saturday evening at his mother’s residence in East Hillside.
Investigation and Arrest
According to court records, Nathan Davin initially claimed to have found his mother dead in her house, but later admitted to the crime during a police interview. The investigation revealed that Mae Dean Davin was shot in the face at close range, and the words “go to hell” and “several other satanic symbols and phrases” were found on a surface in the house. Davin’s neighbor reported that he had knocked on their door at 10:50 p.m. and stated that there had been a death, and that he was drunk and only wearing boxer shorts at the time.
The police found Davin on the porch of his house, where he stated that he had just woken up and found his mother dead in the living room. However, officials discovered that Davin had blood on his hands and found a devastating gunshot wound on Mae Dean Davin’s body. A shell casing was found on the floor, and a bullet was found near the wound. Further investigation revealed two pistols in Nathan Davin’s bedroom and several other weapons in an unexpected safe.
Charges and Court Appearance
Nathan Davin was charged with deliberate murder and was brought to the public safety building, where his bloody boxers and other physical evidence were collected. He refused to speak to investigators and asked for a lawyer, but was heard making several spontaneous statements, including “Wake Up To Bulls -” and “My life went there”. During an interview, Davin admitted to the crime, stating “God damn it, I killed my mother”.
Davin’s criminal history appears to be limited to several impairments and a handful of other non-violent crimes, although he was charged with a fifth-degree offense in 2005, which was dropped. The district judge of St. Louis County, Eric Hylden, set an unconditional bail at $750,000 and refused to grant supervised release. Davin’s next court appearance is scheduled for September 15th.
This case is the third murder reported in Duluth this year, and highlights the issue of domestic violence in the city. According to data, more than half of the city’s murders in the past five years have involved domestic violence. For more information on this case, visit Here
