Weather Update for September 22, 2025: Hurricane Gabrielle, Earthquakes, and Severe Weather

As the first day of fall arrives, the weather is making headlines across the United States. According to FOX Weather Meteorologist Britta Merwin, Hurricane Gabrielle is rapidly intensifying in the central subtropical Atlantic and could become a major hurricane by Monday night. The National Hurricane Center is closely monitoring the storm as it approaches Bermuda.

The Atlantic Basin is also experiencing other areas of concern that could potentially develop into tropical threats. The graphic below shows the tropical weather outlook for the Atlantic Basin.

Hurricane Gabrielle and Other Weather Concerns

In addition to Hurricane Gabrielle, the San Francisco Bay Area experienced a magnitude 4.3 earthquake early Monday morning. The earthquake was reported in the Berkeley area, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The graphic below shows information on the earthquake.

Severe Weather and Fall Season

Severe thunderstorms caused damage in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, injuring one person and damaging a Walmart warehouse. The National Weather Service is investigating whether the damage was caused by a tornado or straight-line winds. Meanwhile, fall has officially begun in the Northern Hemisphere, with the autumnal equinox occurring on Monday at 2:19 p.m. ET.
