Deadly Prison Riot in Ecuador Leaves 13 Inmates and 1 Guard Dead

In a shocking turn of events, a violent prison riot broke out in Ecuador, resulting in the deaths of 13 inmates and 1 guard. The clash between rival gangs, Los Choneros and Los Lobos, occurred in a prison in Machala, near the Peruvian border. According to Colonel William Calle, a masked police officer, the mayhem was sparked by gunfire in the early morning hours, which alerted prison guards and police.

The confrontation, which lasted approximately 40 minutes, involved inmates firing guns, throwing bombs, and grenades. The violence was so intense that an unknown number of inmates managed to escape, with 13 later being recaptured. The dead inmates belonged to the two rival gangs, which have been designated as foreign terrorist organizations by the U.S. earlier this month.

Overcrowding and Gang Violence Plague Ecuador’s Prisons

Ecuador’s prisons are notorious for being among the most dangerous in the world, with many being taken over by drug gangs. The penitentiaries have been under military control since January 2024, after President Daniel Noboa declared a state of “internal armed conflict” following a brutal wave of violence sparked by the jailbreak of a powerful crime boss. The prison where the riot occurred was housing double the number of inmates it was designed for, which likely contributed to the violence.

The country has seen a significant increase in homicides, with over 4,600 recorded in the first half of the year, a 47% increase from the same period in 2024. The ongoing gang violence has led to the deaths of several high-profile officials, including the director of Ecuador’s biggest prison, Maria Daniela Icaza, and the head of a prison in the Amazonian province of Sucumbios, Alex Guevara.

Government Efforts to Combat Gang Violence

The Ecuadoran government has been working to combat the gang violence, including the recapture of the country’s biggest drug lord, Adolfo Macías, alias Fito, in June. Macías was extradited to the United States in July and pleaded not guilty to multiple counts, including international cocaine distribution and smuggling firearms from the U.S. Despite these efforts, the violence continues unabated, highlighting the need for further action to address the root causes of the problem.

According to data from the Ecuadoran Observatory of Organized Crime, the country’s prisons are in dire need of reform to address the overcrowding and gang violence. The government must work to improve the conditions in the prisons and provide alternative solutions to reduce the violence and prevent further bloodshed.
