President Trump Cancels Meeting with Democratic Leaders Amid Government Shutdown Fears
President Trump has cancelled a meeting with Democratic leaders in Congress, citing their “unserious and ridiculous demands” in the ongoing fight over funding the government. The meeting, which was set to take place this week, was intended to discuss a short-term funding extension to avoid a government shutdown on October 1.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries had confirmed the meeting earlier on Tuesday, but President Trump took to Truth Social to call off the gathering, stating that no meeting could be productive until the Democrats “become realistic” with their demands. The Democrats had put forward a proposal to extend government funding until October 31, which included a permanent extension of enhanced tax credits for Americans who purchase health insurance through the Affordable Care Act marketplace, as well as a clawback of some of the policies put in place by President Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” earlier this year.
Government Funding Deadline Looms
The House had approved a measure to keep the government funded until November 21, along with funds for additional security for lawmakers and other officials, but both proposals fell short in the Senate last Friday. Congress is now in recess until next week, leaving just days to act before the October 1 deadline. The Senate will return next week, while House GOP leaders have extended the lower chamber’s break past the deadline to pressure the Senate to adopt their bill.
President Trump has been critical of the Democratic proposal, which would roll back cuts to Medicaid and restore funding for public radio and TV stations that was cut earlier this year. In his Truth Social post, he stated that he looks forward to meeting with the Democrats when they “become realistic about the things that our Country stands for.” The president’s decision to cancel the meeting has been met with criticism from Democratic leaders, with Jeffries saying “Trump Always Chickens Out” and Schumer telling the president, “When you’re finished ranting, we can sit down and discuss health care.”
Democrats Respond to Cancellation
Schumer also chimed in, stating that “Trump is running away from the negotiating table before he even gets there. While Americans face rising costs and a Republican healthcare crisis, Trump would rather throw a tantrum than do his job. Democrats are ready to work to avoid a shutdown — Trump and Republicans are holding America hostage. Donald Trump will own the shutdown.” The cancellation of the meeting has raised fears that a government shutdown is becoming increasingly likely, with just days to go before the October 1 deadline.
