College Football Coaching Carousel Begins, But Gophers Have Taken Steps to Retain P.J. Fleck
The college football season is only a month old, and the coaching carousel has already started spinning, with UCLA, Virginia Tech, and Oklahoma State looking for new leaders. P.J. Fleck’s Situation at Minnesota
Gophers head coach P.J. Fleck was a top candidate for the UCLA opening in February 2024, receiving a significant offer from the Bruins. However, Fleck turned it down, and the Bruins went on to hire DeShaun Foster, who was recently fired after an 0-3 start. According to the Pioneer Press, there is no indication that UCLA is considering Fleck for the position this time around.
Despite this, Fleck’s name is likely to come up in discussions for other openings, given his impressive track record at Minnesota. Gophers athletics director Mark Coyle acknowledged this, stating, “His name’s going to come up at every job… I think that’s a good thing for Minnesota, because we have somebody that people want and people recognize what he’s done.” Coyle also expressed his desire to keep Fleck at Minnesota, citing his significant contributions to the program.
Contract Extensions and Retention Bonuses
In July, Fleck received a one-year contract extension, which included increased retention bonuses but smaller buyout totals. He is set to make $6 million annually in a deal that runs through December 31, 2030. The retention bonuses begin at $1 million this year and increase to $1.2 million in 2026, with annual sums split evenly and paid on September 1 and December 31 each year.
According to industry sources, this contract extension was a smart move by Coyle to stay ahead of the market. Fleck’s salary, including retention bonuses, is now tied for 11th in the 18-team Big Ten. The retention bonuses are considered hooks to help keep Fleck in Minnesota, while his buyout structure provides a level of security for the university.
Fleck’s Commitment to Minnesota
Fleck has consistently expressed his commitment to Minnesota, citing his ability to “do more with less” as a key factor in his success. At Big Ten media days in July, he stated, “I fit at Minnesota… Because I’ve always been able to do a little more with a little less. That’s my life.” He also acknowledged the challenges of competing with top teams in the conference, saying, “We are not the highest paid roster in the Big Ten… But my job is to do more with less.”
