Compassionate Caregiving: A Calling Born from Faith and Service

Grace Harris, a 27-year-old from St. Paul, has found her calling in in-home caregiving, inspired by her Christian faith and a desire to serve others. Her journey began when members of her church asked for help caring for a couple, which eventually led to her caring for a 92-year-old woman from her church in Illinois. This experience not only deepened her faith but also sparked a passion for caregiving, driving her to pursue a career in healthcare.

Harris’s dedication to caregiving has earned her recognition, including being named one of 13 recipients of the Jean Griswold Foundation’s National Caregiver Scholarship. This scholarship not only acknowledges her compassion and commitment to caregiving but also supports her pursuit of higher education in healthcare. Currently, Harris is studying to become a physician assistant at Bethel University in Arden Hills, a career path that will allow her to continue serving others with the same care and dedication she has shown thus far.

A Selfless Journey in Caregiving

Harris’s journey in caregiving began as a volunteer, helping a couple with groceries and housework after the wife broke her hip. This initial act of kindness blossomed into months of care, including cooking, cleaning, and providing companionship. Her selflessness and faith-driven desire to serve led her to quit her job and help the 92-year-old woman relocate to California to be near her family. Harris’s commitment extended to carrying the woman to her granddaughter’s wedding and supporting her through end-of-life care until her passing in 2023.

Samantha “Eva” Laktineh, the daughter of the 92-year-old woman, praises Harris for her faithfulness, dependability, and unwavering commitment to caring for her mother. Laktineh, who was dealing with severe back pain and unable to care for her mother herself, expresses gratitude for Harris’s selfless support during a challenging time, highlighting the profound impact of Harris’s caregiving on their family’s life.

The Need for Compassionate Caregivers

The Jean Griswold Foundation’s scholarship awarded to Harris underscores the critical need for compassionate and dedicated caregivers in the healthcare sector. The foundation, established in honor of Jean Griswold, who founded Griswold Home Care in 1982, aims to support caregivers in their educational and career pursuits. Sarah Latini, director of the Jean Griswold Foundation, emphasizes the importance of recognizing and supporting caregivers, especially in light of the pandemic, which has highlighted the sacrifices caregivers make in supporting the elderly and vulnerable populations.

Nicole Myhre, co-owner of Griswold Home Care of Anoka County, notes that the hardest part of caregiving is often working with clients on their bad days and addressing issues of loneliness and isolation among seniors. However, she praises Harris for her outstanding work ethic, positive attitude, and the purpose she brings to her clients, making her an exemplary model of compassionate caregiving.

A Rewarding Career Path

Harris’s experience and the recognition she has received serve as a testament to the rewarding nature of a career in caregiving. Despite the challenges, Harris finds joy and fulfillment in her work, particularly in the gratitude and companionship she shares with her clients. The scholarship she received will enable her to continue her education and serve future patients with the same dedication and care that have defined her journey thus far.

For those considering a career in caregiving, Harris’s story offers a compelling example of the difference one can make in the lives of others. With the current shortage of in-home caregivers and nurses, this field presents a wide range of opportunities for individuals who are committed to providing compassionate care. As Harris embarks on her journey to become a physician assistant, her story inspires others to follow in her footsteps, driven by a passion for service and a commitment to caring for those in need.
