You can now purchase issues via ChatGPT with recent “Checkout” software

ChatGPT’s Foray into E-commerce: Revolutionizing Online Shopping

ChatGPT, the AI-powered chatbot, is set to transform the online shopping experience with its new “Instant Checkout” feature. This innovative tool allows users to make purchases directly within the chat, eliminating the need to navigate outside of the app. According to OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, this feature marks the next step in “agentic commerce,” where the app acts as the shopper’s agent, interacting with both the buyer and the seller.

For instance, if a user queries ChatGPT for the “best mattress under $1,000” or “gift for an avid reader,” the AI-powered bot will suggest relevant products from across the internet. If the user wants to purchase one of these recommendations, they can now do so within the chat, provided the product is supported by Instant Checkout. Currently, ChatGPT users can buy directly from U.S. Etsy sellers, and through a partnership with Shopify, the app will soon give consumers access to over 1 million vendors, including notable brands like Glossier, SKIMS, and Steve Madden.

Partnership with Shopify and Stripe

The partnership between ChatGPT, Shopify, and Stripe enables merchants to reach hundreds of millions of people while maintaining full control over their payments, systems, and customer relationships. As Vanessa Lee, VP of product at Shopify, noted, “Shopping is changing fast. People are discovering products in AI conversations, not just through search or ads.” This shift in consumer behavior has led Shopify to position its merchants at the forefront of the emerging era of agentic commerce.

According to OpenAI, the Instant Checkout feature, which was co-developed with payment processor Stripe, currently only supports single-item purchases. However, this technology has the potential to revolutionize the way people shop online, making it more seamless and convenient. As Lee emphasized, “We’re making sure our merchants thrive in the era of agentic commerce… We’re helping everyone from indie brands to household names reach shoppers in entirely new ways.”

Amazon’s Entry into Agentic Commerce

E-commerce giant Amazon is also exploring the world of agentic AI with its “Buy for Me” feature in the Amazon Shopping App. This feature allows shoppers to purchase goods from vendors who don’t sell their products on Amazon.com without leaving the Amazon ecosystem. While Amazon’s approach differs from ChatGPT’s Instant Checkout, both demonstrate the growing importance of agentic commerce in the online shopping landscape.

As the e-commerce industry continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how ChatGPT’s Instant Checkout feature and Amazon’s “Buy for Me” feature shape the future of online shopping.
