Iowa School Superintendent Faces Firearms Charges After Immigration Arrest

The superintendent of Iowa’s largest school district, Ian Roberts, has been charged with possessing firearms while in the U.S. illegally, according to federal prosecutors. Roberts, who resigned from his position as Des Moines’ superintendent of schools, was detained by immigration agents last week and found to have a handgun in his vehicle.

Roberts, 54, is originally from Guyana and had been authorized to work in the U.S. between December 2018 and 2020. However, he has since lost his lawful employment authorization, according to the complaint. Federal authorities also alleged that Roberts had a final removal order issued last year, which was denied by an immigration judge in April this year.

Background and Arrest

Roberts was pulled over by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents and fled, but was eventually arrested with the help of the Iowa State Patrol. During his arrest, federal agents found a loaded handgun wrapped in a towel inside his vehicle. A search of his home also uncovered three more firearms, including a pistol, a rifle, and a shotgun, all of which were allegedly loaded.

Roberts’ attorney, Alfredo Parrish, stated that his client will plead not guilty to the charges, citing a presumption of innocence. Parrish also mentioned that there has not been an indictment returned by the grand jury yet. The complaint alleged that Roberts had been under the impression that his immigration case was “resolved successfully” due to a letter from his prior attorney, Jackeline Gonzalez.

One of the firearms found, a pistol, was believed to have been purchased by Roberts’ wife. The other three firearms were found during a search of his home. Roberts has been jailed in Sioux City since his arrest and appeared by video before a federal magistrate judge.

Conclusion and Next Steps

The case highlights the complexities of immigration laws and the importance of ensuring that individuals are aware of their legal status. Roberts’ attorney has stated that his client will plead not guilty, and the case will proceed to the grand jury for indictment. For more information on this developing story, please visit Here
