Introduction to Equine Therapy: A New Program for Veterans and At-Risk Youth

Windfall Equestrian Center in Stillwater is launching a new equine therapy program, specifically designed to support veterans and at-risk youth. This innovative program aims to provide a unique and effective approach to addressing mental health challenges, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression. To introduce this new program, the center will host an open house on Saturday, October 4, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Open House Activities and Equine Therapy Program Details

The open house event will feature a range of activities, including a horse soccer game, pony rides, interactive games, crafts, and horsemanship activities like grooming and feeding. These activities will not only showcase the trust and communication skills involved in equine therapy but also provide attendees with a chance to connect with the horses in a low-pressure and comfortable environment. According to Jennifer Collman, the executive director and equine specialist at Windfall Equine Therapy Center, the open house activities will give people the opportunity to experience the powerful bond between humans and horses.

Equine therapy involves a licensed mental health professional and a horse working together to help individuals with mental health challenges. The program’s mission is to offer hope, healing, compassion, and strength to veterans and at-risk youth. The therapy center will offer equine therapy sessions for veterans from 6 to 8 p.m. on October 7, 14, 21, and 28, with sessions supported by donations.

Effectiveness of Equine Therapy: Research and Studies

A study conducted by Columbia University enrolled 63 veterans with PTSD in equine therapy and found that more than half of the participants showed a marked reduction in PTSD and depression both immediately after treatment and at a three-month follow-up. This research highlights the potential benefits of equine therapy in addressing mental health challenges. The Windfall Equestrian Center’s new program aims to build on this research, providing a supportive and effective environment for veterans and at-risk youth to heal and grow.
