Forest Lake Area Schools Superintendent Announces Retirement

Forest Lake Area Schools Superintendent Steve Massey will retire at the end of the school year, marking the end of a 27-year tenure with the district. Massey, 62, of Forest Lake, announced his retirement during the school board meeting on Thursday night, with his last day set for June 30.

Massey, who has been superintendent since 2017, was in the final year of a three-year contract. He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve the students, families, and staff of the district, stating, “It has been my greatest honor to serve the students, families and staff of this amazing community and school district for the past 27 years. My greatest desire has always been to lead the district to a better place during my tenure as superintendent.”

A Legacy of Leadership and Growth

School Board Chairman Curt Rebelein praised Massey’s leadership, stating, “It was a shock to us all, but I think Steve is leaving behind a really good legacy, and I wish him well in his retirement. It’s an exciting time for him. He’s been a great superintendent in a lot of ways for Forest Lake Area Schools. He has led us through some pretty major, pretty amazing changes the last couple of years.” Rebelein has already begun the process of searching for Massey’s replacement, aiming to attract top talent to fill the position.

Massey’s departure will leave a significant void in the district, according to board member Gail Theisen, who described it as a “gaping hole.” Theisen acknowledged Massey’s impact on the district, saying, “Your have shown us what teamwork is and how to be strong and respectful. We will carry on the good work, having learned from you. We will continue in your absence to go forward with integrity, respect and to always focus on what’s best for our students.”

A District in Good Shape

Massey highlighted the district’s positive trajectory, noting that enrollment is increasing despite declining birthrates, and the district’s financial footing is solid. He also mentioned that the district’s reserve funds are strong, indicating a stable financial foundation. Massey has worked in the district since 1999, serving 14 years as principal of Forest Lake Area High School before becoming superintendent. He also teaches the superintendency course and the principalship course at the University of Minnesota.

As the district prepares for the transition, Rebelein emphasized the importance of finding a suitable replacement, citing the need for a strong leader to navigate upcoming challenges, such as elementary-school boundary changes set to take effect next fall. With Massey’s retirement, the district will enter a new era, and the search for his successor is underway.
