Southland High School Football: Top Performers of Week 5
The fifth week of high school football in the Southland has come to a close, and it was a week filled with impressive performances from talented athletes across the region. From rushing and passing to receiving and defensive plays, several players stood out for their exceptional skills and contributions to their teams’ successes. Here’s a look at some of the top performers from Week 5.
Rushing Leaders
Jeremiah Watson of Murrieta Valley had a standout game, rushing for 254 yards and scoring five touchdowns in a win over Norco. Matix Frithsmith of Hart also had a notable performance, rushing for 142 yards and two touchdowns, while also catching five passes for 100 yards and a touchdown, and returning a kickoff 82 yards for another touchdown. Demanie Bell of Westlake rushed for 190 yards on just 12 carries and scored three touchdowns in a win over Rio Mesa. Other notable rushing performances included Malaki Davis of Corona Centennial with 139 yards and three touchdowns, Gabe Villa of Bishop Diego with 133 yards and two touchdowns, and Trevor Schneider of Chaparral with 128 yards.
Passing Highlights
On the passing front, Star Thomas, a sophomore from Orange, threw for 313 yards and six touchdowns in a win. Jaden Jefferson of Cathedral had a remarkable game, passing for 412 yards and six touchdowns, and also rushing for two touchdowns. Luke Fahey of Mission Viejo passed for 329 yards and two touchdowns, while Tua Rojas of Bishop Diego had touchdown passes of 38, 62, 27, and 33 yards. Julian Medina of Norco passed for 349 yards and six touchdowns, despite his team’s loss to Murrieta Valley. Other notable passing performances included Ryan Rakowski of Palos Verdes with four touchdowns, DJ Mitchell of La Habra with 221 yards and three touchdowns, and Brady Annett of Corona del Mar with 272 yards and four touchdowns.
Receiving and Defensive Stars
In receiving, Bryce Vasquez of La Habra had 10 catches for 151 yards and two touchdowns. Deance’ Lewis of Crenshaw made five receptions for 77 yards and a touchdown, and Blake Wong of Norco had 11 catches for 278 yards and five touchdowns. On the defensive side, Isaiah Phelps of Oxnard Pacifica had six solo tackles and 13 assists, and Zeelen Shatswell of Golden Valley had two interceptions. Saul Avila-Machado of Dorsey contributed two sacks, and Havon Finney Jr. and Myles Baker of Sierra Canyon each returned an interception for a touchdown.
Special Teams and Overall Excellence
In special teams, Carter Sobel of Sierra Canyon made three field goals in his season debut, and LeHenry Solomon of Chaminade returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown. Mason Miller of Leuzinger had an 88-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
