London — A recent terrorist attack outside a synagogue in Manchester, England, has left two people dead and three others seriously wounded. The incident occurred on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish religious calendar, and has sparked widespread concern and condemnation. According to the Greater Manchester Police, one of the victims may have died from a gunshot wound fired by a police officer.

The police investigation has identified the two victims as Adrian Daulby and Melvin Cravitz, both local residents. A government pathologist has provisionally determined that one of the deceased victims suffered a wound consistent with a gunshot injury. The suspect, Jihad Al-Shamie, a 35-year-old British citizen of Syrian descent, was shot and killed by police officers following the attack.

Attack Details and Investigation

The attack occurred on Thursday morning when the suspect drove a vehicle toward people outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue and then attacked them with a knife. The police were called to the scene at approximately 9:30 a.m. local time. The suspect wore a vest that appeared to contain explosives, but no viable explosives were found.

Three other individuals have been arrested in connection with the attack, suspected of commission, preparation, and instigation of acts of terrorism. The police investigation is ongoing, and the community remains on high alert.

Response and Condolences

U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer visited the scene of the attack on Friday, speaking with police and other officials outside the synagogue. In a social media post, Starmer condemned the attack as a “vile terrorist attack that attacked Jews, because they are Jews.” He promised to do everything in his power to guarantee the security of the Jewish community in the U.K.

The incident has sparked widespread condemnation and concern, with many calling for increased efforts to combat antisemitism and terrorism. The investigation is ongoing, and the community remains on high alert.
