Jeff Bezos Envisions a Future Where Millions Live and Work in Space
Speaking at Italian Tech Week 2025, Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon and Blue Origin, painted a vivid picture of a future where space is no longer a distant dream, but a reality where humans, robots, and infrastructure coexist. According to Bezos, the next couple of decades will see a significant acceleration in space exploration, with millions of people living in space, not out of necessity, but by choice.
Bezos, who stepped down as Amazon’s CEO in 2021 to focus on Blue Origin, emphasized that the work required in space will soon be accomplished by robots, making it easier for humans to live and work in space. With an estimated net worth of $232 billion, Bezos is investing heavily in Blue Origin, which competes directly with Elon Musk’s SpaceX. The company recently achieved a major milestone with the successful launch of its New Glenn rocket, which entered orbital space for the first time.
The New Glenn rocket is expected to launch again in late October or early November, carrying two NASA spacecraft to Mars. Bezos also announced that a third launch is planned for 2026, which will send the Blue Moon Mark 1 lander to the lunar surface. The company is also developing a larger hydrogen-powered lander for NASA’s Artemis Program. Jeff Bezos speaking on Oct. 3 at Italian Tech Week 2025. Photo by Nicolò Campo/LightRocket via Getty Images
A New Era for Space Exploration
Bezos also predicted a surge in orbital data centers, which will be more cost-effective than traditional data centers due to the ability to harness solar power 24/7 in space. This, he believes, will be the next step in improving life on Earth, following the success of weather satellites and communication satellites. The Moon, with its low gravitational field and energy efficiency, could also become an ideal rocket fuel depot, making it an attractive destination for space missions.
As Blue Origin continues to push the boundaries of space exploration, Bezos remains committed to his vision, stating that he is “the least retired person in the world” and will never retire because “work is too much fun.” With his expertise and experience in the tech industry, Bezos is well-positioned to lead the charge in space exploration and development.
