Medical Helicopter Crash on Highway 50 in Sacramento Leaves Three in Critical Condition
A devastating crash occurred on Monday evening when a medical helicopter smashed into Highway 50 in Sacramento, leaving three passengers in critical condition. The impact was so severe that first responders were astonished that anyone survived. One passenger was ejected from the helicopter and landed 10 feet away, while another was pinned beneath the wreckage, according to authorities.
As Capt. Justin Sylvia of the Sacramento Fire Department noted, “I’m shocked that anyone actually was talking and awake or living through all of this.” The crash happened at 7:08 p.m. on the eastbound lanes of Highway 50, just west of 59th Street, with three staff members on board. Two female staff members and one male staff member were transported to a hospital in critical condition.
Rescue Efforts and Crash Investigation
The first fire captain on the scene enlisted the help of about 15 bystanders to lift part of the helicopter off one of the victims trapped underneath, Sylvia explained. Another victim was rescued from a helicopter chair that was ejected during the crash. It appeared that the helicopter’s tail rotor tore up weeds on the side of the highway before skidding across five freeway lanes.
REACH air ambulances are designed to transport patients to hospitals, often from rural or hard-to-reach areas. Fortunately, there were no patients on board at the time of the crash. The cause of the accident is still unknown, and an investigation is ongoing. According to flight tracking website FlightRader24, the helicopter had taken off from California Davis Medical Center in Sacramento and was heading north before the crash.
Response and Aftermath
REACH Air Medical Services released a statement expressing concern for those affected and stating that they are working to determine the details of the situation. The company said, “We are aware of an accident involving a REACH Air Medical helicopter on Highway 50 in Sacramento this evening and are keeping all those impacted in our thoughts and prayers.” The incident caused significant traffic congestion on Highway 50, with the eastbound lanes expected to remain closed for the rest of the night.
A key concern for the Fire Department and California Highway Patrol is ensuring that the remaining fuel on the helicopter does not ignite during the investigation. As Capt. Sylvia noted, this is a crucial aspect of the response efforts. For more information on this developing story, please visit Here.
