Opie’s journey began in early July when a severe thunderstorm sparked his escape from his home in Beiber, California. Babcock explained that Opie has a phobia of thunderstorms, which led to his unexpected departure. Despite her efforts to search for him locally, Opie was nowhere to be found, and Babcock feared the worst.

Babcock spent weeks searching for Opie, posting about him in online groups and visiting local shelters. She also reached out to Home Again, a pet microchip company, to report Opie missing. The company helped Babcock track Opie’s microchip, which ultimately led to his safe return.

As the days turned into weeks, Babcock began to lose hope. However, she never gave up, and her persistence paid off when she received a call from the Itasca Police Department in northern Illinois, informing her that Opie’s microchip had been scanned.
A Surprise Reunion
Opie was found wearing a collar and harness with a tag bearing a non-Opie name, suggesting that he may have been taken in by someone who did not know his true identity. Fortunately, the Itasca Police Department and DuPage County Animal Services worked together to reunite Opie with Babcock.

The reunion was an emotional one, with Babcock and Opie sharing a heartwarming moment. Babcock described the reunion, saying, “As soon as he saw me, he ran up to me and started jumping all over me, and he started making all these cute little noises.” The two then embarked on a road trip back to California, taking in the sights and enjoying each other’s company.
