Leuzinger High’s Football Team Rises to the Top of the Bay League Hierarchy

With back-to-back wins over Palos Verdes and Inglewood, Leuzinger High’s football team has solidified its position as a top contender in the Bay League. The team’s latest victory, a 40-14 win over Palos Verdes at SoFi Stadium, showcased the Olympians’ resilience and adaptability in the face of adversity. Despite losing quarterback Russell Sekona to a fractured hand in the second quarter, Leuzinger (5-0, 2-0) relied on its defense and the play of running back-turned-quarterback Journee Tonga to secure the win.

A Stellar Performance by Journee Tonga

Tonga’s impressive performance was a highlight of the game, with the athlete contributing touchdown runs of 14 and 21 yards on option plays. Additionally, Tonga’s 61-yard touchdown pass caught Palos Verdes (4-3, 1-1) off guard, as they had underestimated the 5-foot-8 player’s passing abilities. The speed back, Kelton Strickland, also made a significant impact with an 84-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter. Tonga’s ability to find holes in the Sea Kings’ defense was aided by his offensive line, demonstrating the team’s overall cohesion and strategy.

The Olympians’ defense played a crucial role in the game, frustrating Palos Verdes quarterback Ryan Rakowski and limiting his passing yards to just 12 at halftime. Rakowski’s eventual ejection from the game, along with two Leuzinger teammates, including linebacker Samu Moala, added to the drama of the evening. The ejections, which can result in a one to three-game suspension, were a consequence of a squabble between Rakowski and Moala. As Moala reflected, “High emotion, lesson learned.”

A Brief Rally by Palos Verdes

Although Palos Verdes made a brief rally in the fourth quarter, recovering an onside kick and a fumble, and closing the gap to 27-14 with two touchdown passes by senior quarterback Giorgio Di Mascio, Leuzinger’s victory was ultimately clinched by Pakipole Moala’s 100-yard interception return for a touchdown. Tonga then added his third rushing touchdown of the night, solidifying the Olympians’ win. The final score of 40-14 was a testament to Leuzinger’s strength and determination, as they continue to dominate the Bay League.
