A Mysterious Death in Indiana: The Role of a Protective Pit Bull Mix

“Willow,” a black and white female pit bull mix, belonged to Kevin and Alison Davis, a married couple who loved her dearly. However, on August 12, 2023, Willow became a key figure in a murder investigation that would shake the community of New Haven, Indiana. According to Steve Krause, Alison Davis’ father, Kevin and Alison were a happy couple who adored each other, often calling each other “babe.” Their friend, Jason Young, described Willow as “a big barker and kind of intimidating at first,” but also noted that she would quickly warm up to people.

On the night of the incident, Kevin and Alison Davis had been out at a local tavern, where friends and staff reported that they seemed happy and in good spirits. However, upon returning home, Alison Davis claimed that they had an argument, which led her to sleep on the couch downstairs while Kevin went to their upstairs bedroom, where Willow was waiting. Alison Davis would later tell police that she was awakened by a loud noise and found Kevin unresponsive, face down, in a large pool of blood. She claimed that Kevin had fallen down the stairs.

A Murder Investigation Unfolds

After emergency responders rushed Kevin Davis to the hospital, Det. James Krueger questioned Alison Davis, who warned him about Willow’s protective nature. Krueger decided not to enter the room where Willow was, citing concerns for his safety. Instead, he searched the rest of the house and initially believed Alison Davis’ story about the fatal fall. However, four months later, Indiana authorities charged Alison Davis with murder, alleging that she had used an improvised weapon to kill her husband.

The trial would be a dramatic and intense affair, with the prosecution presenting their case against Alison Davis. However, after 17 months of incarceration, the jury would ultimately acquit her of the murder charge, citing a lack of evidence and holes in the prosecution’s case. A juror would later tell correspondent Peter Van Sant that the jury had strong reasons for voting to acquit Alison Davis.

A Debate Over Justice and Evidence

Despite the acquittal, Police Chief Krueger would express his belief that the verdict might have been different if he had been able to enter the room where Willow was on the morning of the incident. He suggested that the dog may have been intentionally used to keep him out of the room, potentially concealing a murder weapon. However, Steve Krause, Alison Davis’ father, would argue that the death was simply an accident, stating that “there’s no evidence … It’s unbelievable. Such injustice.”

Today, Alison Davis is free, living with her parents and trying to rebuild her life without Kevin. Willow remains by her side, a constant companion in the face of tragedy and uncertainty. As the community continues to debate the circumstances surrounding Kevin Davis’ death, one thing is clear: the role of Willow, the protective pit bull mix, will forever be etched in the memories of those involved in this haunting and complex case.
