California Considers Closing Interstate 5 Due to Military Celebration

Amid concerns over a White House-directed plan to use live ordnance during a military anniversary celebration, Governor Gavin Newsom’s office is weighing the possibility of closing parts of Interstate 5 starting Friday. The event, titled “Sea to Shore — A Review of Amphibious Strength,” is scheduled to take place off the coast of Camp Pendleton in San Diego County, where Navy ships are expected to fire over the freeway onto the base.

According to reports, the celebration will feature Vice President JD Vance and include a live amphibious assault demonstration. However, Newsom’s office has received little information about the event or safety plans, sparking concerns over the potential risks to motorists and residents in the area. The governor has expressed his dissatisfaction with the lack of coordination and communication from the federal government, stating that “California always honors our Marines — but this isn’t the right way to go about it.”

Military Celebration and Potential Freeway Closures

The military show of force coincides with No Kings rallies and marches across the state on Saturday, which are expected to draw large crowds and demonstrations challenging government overreach. The potential closure of Interstate 5, which carries over 80,000 travelers daily, could result in significant gridlock and disruptions to traffic between Orange County and San Diego County. Camp Pendleton has advised nearby residents of live-fire training with high explosive munitions through Sunday, which will result in some roads on base being closed.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is also expected to attend the event and deliver remarks, along with Vice President Vance. The celebration is part of the Marine Corps’ 250th anniversary, and the Trump administration had previously planned a major celebration next month, which included an air and sea show with the Blue Angels and parading warships. However, those plans have been called off, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Concerns and Controversies Surrounding the Event

The potential use of live ordnance during the celebration has raised concerns among local residents and officials, who are calling for greater transparency and coordination from the federal government. Governor Newsom has criticized the Trump administration’s handling of the event, stating that they should focus on paying their military, lowering grocery prices, and honoring soldiers for their service instead of “pompous displays of power.” The lack of communication and coordination has sparked controversy, with many questioning the necessity and safety of the event.
