North Carolina School Therapist Charged with Attempted Murder

A school therapist in North Carolina has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly trying to drug a person’s drink, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. Cheryl Harris Gates, 43, has also been charged with contaminating food or drink to render one mentally incapacitated or physically helpless, stalking, and damage to property.

As reported by CBS affiliate WBTV, Gates allegedly put prescription medicines in her husband’s energy drink. Furthermore, court documents reveal that she used ChatGPT to research drug combinations that could be lethal or incapacitating. The police have not disclosed whether Gates’ husband consumed the contaminated beverage or his current condition.

Allegations of Stalking and Property Damage

In addition to the attempted murder charge, Gates is also accused of stalking her husband, breaking his window, and installing a tracking device on his vehicle, as stated in the court documents reviewed by WBTV. She was initially arrested on charges of stalking and damage to property on October 7 and released. However, she was later rearrested on October 10 on the attempted murder and contaminated food or drink charges.

Gates was denied bond and remains in custody, with her next court date scheduled for October 30, according to WBTV. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools website, which has since been taken down, listed Gates as a pediatric occupational therapist. The district superintendent’s office has not responded to inquiries regarding her employment status.

Investigation and Assurance of No Involvement with Students

The police have confirmed that the alleged incidents occurred off school property and did not involve any students, teachers, or faculty members. This incident bears some resemblance to a recent case in Connecticut, where a woman was charged with attempting to fatally poison her partner during a bitter custody battle.
