Tragedy Strikes: Woman Sentenced to 4 Years for Fatal Amish Buggy Crash
A devastating incident occurred on September 25, 2023, in Fillmore County, Minnesota, when Samantha Jo Petersen, 37, crashed her SUV into an Amish buggy, killing two children and a pony. The father of the children, who had taken precautions to ensure their safety by training a gentle pony and installing a slow-moving vehicle sign, expressed his regret for not considering the actions of others. In a written statement to the court, he stated, “I had not considered other people and their decision-making.”
The crash happened at 8:25 a.m. on Fillmore County Road 1, near the intersection with County Road 102. Petersen, who was under the influence of methamphetamine at the time, initially attempted to deceive authorities by having her identical twin sister, Sarah Beth Petersen, take responsibility for the crash. This attempt to deceive was a significant factor in the sentencing decision, as Judge Jeremy Clinefelter emphasized that Petersen’s actions were “all about you” and that she had shown a lack of regard for the victims and their families.
Consequences and Sentencing
Petersen pleaded guilty to two counts of criminal vehicular homicide and operation in July. She was sentenced to four years in prison, to be served concurrently with a 23-month sentence for another count of criminal vehicular operation. The judge also ordered her to serve two years and eight months of the sentence in custody, with the possibility of early release and supervised release for the remaining year and four months. Petersen’s sister, Sarah, was sentenced to 90 days in jail under work release for lying to investigators.
The mother of the children described the morning of the crash as a routine day, with the children preparing for school and a horse sale. She recalled seeing the devastation at the scene and the horrific injuries sustained by her children. The parents’ written statements to the court expressed their “indescribable” pain and loss, with the father noting that his youngest child was always full of energy and life, making it difficult to see her “still form” in a coffin.
A Message of Sorrow and Accountability
Petersen apologized for her actions, acknowledging the “unthinkable void” she had caused in the family’s life. She also expressed her commitment to getting and staying sober since being charged in the crash. The judge emphasized that the prison sentence would not hinder Petersen’s efforts to work on her sobriety. The incident serves as a tragic reminder of the importance of responsible behavior and the devastating consequences of reckless actions.
