How to get across the Interstate 5 closure at present by means of Camp Pendleton in Southern California

Date:

Interstate 5 Closure: What You Need to Know

The Interstate 5 freeway, a vital transportation artery connecting Los Angeles and San Diego, has been temporarily shut down due to a military event involving live artillery rounds being fired over the freeway. This closure, which began at 11 a.m. and will last until 3 p.m., affects a 17-mile stretch of coastal northern San Diego County, just south of the border with Orange County.

The California Department of Transportation has announced that the closure is directed by the White House and will impact the primary link between the southern coastal edge of Orange County and the northern beach cities of San Diego County. Motorists will be forced to take a detour around the mountainous Camp Pendleton, utilizing Interstate 15 as the primary alternate route.

Understanding the Closure

The closure severs the main connection between San Clemente and Oceanside, making what would normally be a 22-mile, 23-minute drive into a 138-mile, 2-hour-and-20-minute drive. This detour will take motorists through Temecula and Lake Elsinore, adding significant time and mileage to their journey. Additionally, rail service will also be disrupted, affecting the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner and Metrolink service.

The affected area spans from Basilone Drive just south of San Clemente to Harbor Drive just north of Oceanside. With no other nearby alternative routes, traffic delays are expected to be significant, especially during peak travel times.

Alternative Routes

To mitigate the impact of the closure, motorists can take alternative routes to reach their destinations. From San Diego County to Los Angeles County, drivers can use Interstate 15 north through Temecula and Lake Elsinore, then take Route 91 west to Los Angeles. From Los Angeles County to San Diego County, motorists can take Route 91 east through Corona, then Interstate 15 south.

For those traveling from Orange County to San Diego County, the recommended route is to take Route 55 north to Route 91 east, then Interstate 15 south. Conversely, from San Diego County to Orange County, drivers can take Interstate 15 north to Route 91 west, then Route 55 south.

Staying Informed

It is essential for motorists to stay up-to-date with the latest traffic information and road closures to plan their routes accordingly. The California Department of Transportation and other transportation agencies will provide updates on the closure and any changes to the alternate routes.
