Investigation Underway After Rail Conductor Killed by Passing Train in Montana
A tragic incident occurred on Sunday in Columbus, Montana, when a rail conductor employed by BNSF Railway was struck and killed by a passing train. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the death. According to reports, the incident took place at approximately 9:40 a.m. in the town of Columbus, which has a population of around 2,000 people and is located 40 miles southwest of Billings.
The conductor was between two trains at the time of the incident, with one train parked on one track and the other train moving on another track. Nick Jacobs, assistant chief of Columbus Fire Rescue, stated that emergency response officials are still unsure about the exact sequence of events, but it is known that the moving train struck the conductor. BNSF Railway operates one of the largest freight railway networks in the United States, and the company has dispatched investigators to the scene to assist with the investigation.
Response and Investigation
In addition to BNSF investigators, officials from the Columbus Police Department and Stillwater County Sheriff’s Office are also on the scene. The NTSB and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) officials are participating in the investigation as well. A spokesperson for BNSF has stated that the company is referring all questions to the NTSB, and the identity of the deceased conductor has not been released at this time.
The accident resulted in an hours-long road closure at one of the busiest crossings in the area, causing significant disruptions to local traffic. Nearby resident Robert Carlson noted that the area is prone to congestion, stating, “You can see how fast the cars build up here. It’s unusual, but, you know, where trains are concerned, you never know when there’s going to be a problem or accident or collision.”
Safety Concerns and Previous Incidents
A report by the Federal Railroad Administration last year found that BNSF was generally striving to improve safety on a consistent basis. However, the report also noted that front-line workers often did not feel comfortable reporting safety concerns due to fear of disciplinary action. This report was prepared as part of an effort to review all major railroads and address safety concerns following a Norfolk Southern train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio in 2023. In that incident, Norfolk Southern agreed to pay $600 million in a class-action lawsuit settlement related to the derailment.
