Utah Jazz Dominates Season Opener Against Los Angeles Clippers
The Utah Jazz kicked off their season with a resounding 129-108 win against the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday night. Walker Kessler led the team with 22 points and nine rebounds, while Lauri Markkanen scored 20 points. The Jazz’s impressive performance set a team record for points in a season opener, with Brice Sensabaugh adding 20 points off the bench.
Jazz’s Impressive Team Effort
Kessler, the longest-tenured member of the Jazz, had a nearly flawless game, going 7 for 7 from the field, blocking four shots, and finishing with four assists. The team’s crisp passing and precise ball movement led to layups and dunks, with Utah making its first 19 shots in the paint. Keyonte George led the team with nine assists to go with his 16 points, and the Jazz had 38 assists on 48 baskets, shooting 55% from the field.
Clippers’ Disappointing Debut
The new-look Clippers, on the other hand, appeared confused on the court at times, with Ivica Zubac leading the team with 19 points and seven rebounds. James Harden and Brook Lopez each scored 15 points, while Kawhi Leonard had 10 points on 3-of-9 shooting. The Clippers’ 21-point loss was their most lopsided season-opening loss in 17 years.
Notable Performances and Returns
Ace Bailey, the No. 5 pick in this year’s draft, was limited to 20 minutes due to illness and scored two points. Bradley Beal, in his Clippers debut, was also on a minutes restriction and had five points. Taylor Hendricks, who suffered a gruesome broken leg in the third game last season, returned to the court and looked bouncy coming off the bench for Utah, finishing with 13 points and five rebounds.
Halftime Dominance
The Jazz led 78-47 at halftime after shooting 71.8% from the field, with Utah scoring its most points in a first half since the 2023-24 season. The Clippers gave up 78 points in a half only once last season. In the first quarter, Utah was 12 for 12 on two-point field goals and added four threes.
