The escalating energy costs in the United States have become a significant burden for many households, including Suzann Hernandez and Camilo Aguirre, who have been trying to reduce their energy bill. Despite their efforts to insulate their windows, maintain a consistent temperature, and adopt other energy-saving measures, they were disappointed to find that their bill only decreased by $20, far less than the $50 reduction they had expected.
This experience is not unique to Hernandez and Aguirre, as many residents in New Jersey are facing a 17% increase in their average electric bill, following a rate hike approved by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities in February. According to Dan Cassino, a professor of government and politics at Fairleigh Dickinson University, the issue of rising energy costs is not limited to New Jersey, but is a national problem. A report by PowerLines, a nonprofit organization focused on lowering utility bills, found that utility rate increase requests and approvals totaled over $34 billion in the first three quarters of 2025, almost double the $16 billion in requests and approvals over the same period in 2024.
The report also found that these rate hikes are expected to affect over 124 million customers this year, leading to economic hardship for many households. The U.S. Energy Information Administration has reported that residential electricity prices have increased by 11% since January, further exacerbating the problem.

The issue of rising energy costs has become a key campaign topic in the New Jersey gubernatorial race, with both Democratic candidate Mikie Sherrill and Republican candidate Jack Ciattarelli promising to help curb energy bills if elected. Cassino expects the issue to reverberate in races throughout the country, saying, “This is a harbinger of what’s gonna happen next year in the midterm elections. This issue’s not going to go away. It’s not like the power bills are going to go down.”
