Mason Fike’s Brave Stand Against His Attacker
Mason Fike, a 22-year-old senior at St. John’s University in Collegeville, chose not to attend the sentencing of Jeffrey Thomas Rice, the man who brutally stabbed him on their White Bear Lake street over a year ago.
Fike’s decision was not driven by fear, but rather a desire to move on from the traumatic experience. In his victim impact statement, read by his brother in a Ramsey County courtroom, Fike expressed his feelings towards Rice, stating, “I am simply done wasting my life and time being in the same room with someone as worthless as you. I have never been afraid of you, and I never will be.”

The Attack and Its Aftermath
Rice, 20, stabbed Fike multiple times, including in the chest, kidney, bladder, spleen, back, and stomach, after a confrontation on the street. Fike’s girlfriend was with him during the attack and attempted to apply pressure to his wounds until help arrived.
Rice pleaded guilty to first-degree assault and was sentenced to 7½ years in prison. Fike’s family expressed their disappointment with the sentence, feeling it was too lenient considering the severity of the attack.

A History of Violent Behavior
Rice has a history of violent behavior, with multiple charges filed against him since the attack on Fike. These include receiving stolen property, contempt of court, and felony threats of violence. His actions have caused concern for the community, and his lack of remorse has been noted by Fike’s family and the court.
Rice’s sister reported that he had a history of violent outbursts, and his parents have expressed concern for their safety around him. The court has acknowledged the senselessness of the attack and the need for Rice to take responsibility for his actions.
A Message of Hope and Resilience
Despite the traumatic experience, Fike and his family have shown remarkable resilience and courage. Fike’s statement to the court highlighted his determination to move forward and not let the attack define him.
The judge acknowledged the bravery and strength of Fike and his family, stating, “If you didn’t know Mason was a fighter before, you certainly know that now. And I am sincerely heartened to hear that he is recovering.”
Rice apologized for his actions, but his words rang hollow for Fike’s family. The sentence handed down by the court is a step towards justice, but the healing process will be long and difficult for all involved.
