November outlook: See how a La Niña winter will influence climate throughout nation

Understanding the Impact of La Niña on November Weather Patterns

As the United States transitions into autumn, the arrival of La Niña is expected to significantly influence the country’s weather patterns, particularly in November. To better understand the implications of this climate phenomenon, Montana State Earth Sciences Prof. Eric Sproles joined FOX Weather to discuss the expected impacts on winter.

November typically marks a transitional period in the United States, characterized by colder temperatures and the onset of snow in northern cities. The presence of La Niña is expected to persist throughout November, according to the FOX Forecast Center. But what does this mean for the country’s weather patterns? This graphic displays how a La Niña impacts the weather. (FOX Weather)

Overall November Trends: Snowflakes and Severe Weather

November is known for its unpredictable weather, with snow, severe storms, and wild temperature swings becoming more common. As the month progresses, snow begins to fall in higher mountainous altitudes, such as the Rockies, Sierra Nevada, and Appalachia, and eventually makes its way to lower elevations and major cities like Boston, Chicago, and Detroit. Towards the end of November, cold air from Canada will bring snow to the Plains and the Southwest, while lake-effect snow will contribute to the freezing of the Great Lakes.

Cold air clashing with warmer air from the south will also spawn the “second severe storm season” across the Southeast, including Texas and Oklahoma. This phenomenon can lead to tornado outbreaks, as seen in November last year, where a two-day period resulted in a tornado outbreak in Oklahoma and Missouri, with over a dozen tornadoes confirmed in Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. This graphic shows why November is considered the second severe weather season. (FOX Weather)

November Temperature Outlook

According to NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, the temperature outlook for November is expected to be mild, with above-average temperatures predicted for the Central Plains and most of the West Coast. This is consistent with the typical La Niña pattern, where a ridge of high pressure persists across the western portions of the United States. While temperatures are expected to remain near average for November, cold weather outbreaks will become more common in northern areas, particularly in the Northeast. The FOX Forecast Center predicts that the West Coast will experience above-average temperatures, while the Southeast will experience drier-than-average conditions.

November Precipitation Outlook

The precipitation outlook for November highlights a typical La Niña setup, with drier-than-average conditions expected in the Southeast and mid-Atlantic. This will exacerbate drought conditions in areas like Tuscaloosa, Alabama, which has seen only 2.26″ of rain so far this fall, making it the 10th driest fall on record. This graphic shows a precipitation outlook for the month of November. (FOX Weather)

In contrast, the Northern tier of the United States, including the Pacific Northwest, is expected to experience above-average precipitation, consistent with a typical La Niña pattern. This will lead to wetter-than-average conditions in the North and drier conditions in the Southeast.

End of Daylight Saving Time and Its Impact

November also marks the end of daylight saving time, which will result in earlier sunsets across the United States. On November 2, at 2 a.m., most Americans will roll their clocks back one hour, except for Arizona and Hawaii, which do not observe daylight saving time. This graphic displays how Daylight Savings affects Americans differently. (FOX Weather)

The reduction in daylight hours will be more pronounced in the northern tier, with some areas losing an hour or more of daylight. This, combined with the onset of winter, will lead to significant changes in the country’s weather patterns.
