St. Paul Man Pleads Guilty to Fatal Minneapolis Crash

A 30-year-old St. Paul man, Talon Covie-Cardell Walker, has admitted to driving under the influence and causing a fatal crash on an interstate ramp in Minneapolis. The incident occurred on October 23, resulting in the death of 26-year-old Natalie Gubbay from Minneapolis and injuring several others.

Walker pleaded guilty to two counts of criminal vehicular operation in Hennepin County District Court on Friday. As part of a plea agreement, he is expected to receive a sentence of between 7½ and 10 years in prison, with sentencing scheduled for October 2.

Crash Details and Investigation

The crash occurred shortly after 9:15 p.m. when Walker exited Interstate 94 to the east onto Lyndale Avenue and collided with other drivers near Dunwoody Boulevard. Witnesses reported that Walker was driving at approximately 100 miles per hour at the time of the crash.

An analysis of a blood sample from Walker, taken about 2½ hours after the crash, showed a blood alcohol concentration of 0.093 and the presence of fentanyl and marijuana. The legal limit for driving in Minnesota is 0.08 BAC.

The complaint also provided updates on the injured parties. Walker’s passenger, a 20-year-old St. Paul woman who was pregnant at the time, was hospitalized for almost a month with injuries that included fractures to both legs and a dislocated hip. Doctors believe that the injuries will have life-long debilitating effects.

Consequences and Prior Offenses

Walker’s driver’s license had been revoked since April 2021, and it had previously been suspended since November 2019. Court files show that Walker was convicted of careless driving in 2021, driving a motorcycle without a driver’s license in 2019, and having an open bottle and marijuana in a motor vehicle in 2017.

According to the State Department of Public Safety, Walker’s license revocation was still in effect at the time of the fatal crash. The incident highlights the importance of responsible driving and the consequences of driving under the influence.
