Reddit’s Shift Towards Becoming a “True Search Destination” Amidst AI Era

Reddit is thriving in the AI era, with the community-driven discussion site becoming the third most visited website in the U.S., behind Google and YouTube, and ahead of Amazon and Facebook, according to Semrush’s October 2025 data. This surge in popularity can be attributed to the platform’s focus on authentic human conversation, with Huffman emphasizing the importance of “for humans, by humans” approach, even as they utilize AI to spark more meaningful discussions.

Financial Performance and User Growth

Between July and September, Reddit generated $585 million in revenue, representing a 68 percent increase from the same period last year. The company’s net income also saw a significant surge, rising more than fivefold year-over-year to $163 million. Furthermore, Reddit had 116 million daily active users at the end of September, solidifying its position as a leading online platform.

According to Baruch Labunski, CEO at digital marketing company Rank Secure, “As Google and other search engines grapple with issues of trust and authenticity, Reddit possesses what most AI companies are after: authenticated, nuanced, community-driven content.” This unique approach has enabled Reddit to differentiate itself in the AI-dominated landscape.

Redesigning the Reddit Experience

Co-founder and CEO Steve Huffman announced that Reddit is doubling down on making the platform “a true search destination.” To achieve this, the company is redesigning the Reddit experience, focusing on a modern interface with advanced search capabilities. The rollout of its generative AI tool, Reddit Answers, will continue, and new AI features will help users interpret rules unique to each subreddit and bring post insights to the top.

Reddit’s search functionalities were utilized by 75 million users each week in the third quarter, with this number expected to grow. Huffman emphasized that “Reddit Answers provides users with curated, community-powered insights that are often more helpful than traditional web results.” The goal is to create a single, great search experience, setting Reddit apart from other search engines.

Striking a Balance between AI and Human Interaction

While incorporating more AI, specifically in moderation, translation, video, and interactive features, Reddit must navigate the fine line between leveraging technology and preserving the chaotic human interactions that define the platform. As Labunski noted, “The winning strategy is to enable Reddit’s self-discovery and IP moderation with AI, while leaving the chaotic human interactions intact.”

Reddit has launched AI-supported moderator tools in over 3,000 communities, with a broader rollout on the horizon. Additionally, the platform’s AI translation now handles 30 languages, and plans are underway to expand this feature to drive more international growth. The company has also hosted its first video AMA (ask me anything) with NASA and plans to continue expanding video in its over 100,000 subreddit communities.

Advertising and Revenue Growth

Reddit’s advertising platform continues to see updates, with the team developing interactive ads. Huffman emphasized that ads remain their “core business,” and they are continuing to roll out their machine-learning-enabled dynamic product ads, which use user intent data to inform who to show ads to. This targeted approach has contributed to the company’s revenue growth, with Reddit’s hyper-focus on search and AI positioning it for continued success.

As Martin Jeffrey, founder of digital marketing agency Harton Works, observed, “This is Reddit telling the market it wants to be the place where human context gets found and not just the place LLMs crawl.” By prioritizing authentic human conversation and strategic AI integration, Reddit is poised to maintain its position as a leading online platform.
