Maldives turns into solely nation with generational smoking ban

Maldives Implements Groundbreaking Generational Smoking Ban

The Maldives has taken a significant step towards promoting public health by introducing a generational smoking ban, effective from January 1, 2007. This innovative approach makes the Maldives the first nation to implement such a prohibition, as announced by the Health Ministry. The ban aims to “protect public health and promote a tobacco-free generation,” as stated by the ministry.

According to the new provision, individuals born on or after January 1, 2007, are prohibited from purchasing, using, or being sold tobacco products within the Maldives. This comprehensive ban applies to all forms of tobacco, and retailers are required to verify age prior to sale. The measure also extends to visitors to the nation, which is renowned for its luxury tourism and comprises 1,191 tiny coral islets scattered across the equator.

Comprehensive Ban on Electronic Cigarettes and Vaping Products

In addition to the generational smoking ban, the Maldives maintains a comprehensive ban on the import, sale, distribution, possession, and use of electronic cigarettes and vaping products. This ban applies to all individuals, regardless of age. The ministry has also introduced penalties for selling tobacco products to underage persons, with a fine of 50,000 rufiyaa ($3,200), and for using vape devices, with a fine of 5,000 rufiyaa ($320).

The Maldives’ approach is not isolated, as other countries have also explored similar measures. A similar generational ban was proposed in Britain, although it is still in the legislative process. New Zealand, which was the first country to enact such a law against smoking, repealed it in November 2023, less than a year after its introduction.

International Context and Precedents

The Maldives’ generational smoking ban is a significant development in the global effort to reduce tobacco consumption and promote public health. As the world grapples with the challenges of tobacco control, the Maldives’ innovative approach may serve as a model for other nations. With its comprehensive ban on tobacco and vaping products, the Maldives is demonstrating its commitment to protecting the health and well-being of its citizens and visitors.
