Introduction to Xania Monet: The AI Artist Making Waves in the Music Industry

Xania Monet, a popular music artist, has been making headlines with her chart-topping songs, but what’s surprising is that she’s a product of artificial intelligence. Behind this AI avatar is a real person, Telisha “Nikki” Jones, who has been using technology to create music that resonates with millions. In a recent interview with “CBS Mornings,” Jones shared her story and the inspiration behind Xania Monet.

The Creation of Xania Monet

Jones, a 31-year-old Mississippi native, created Xania Monet just four months ago while teaching herself AI. Despite not being a singer, Jones writes the lyrics, which are based on her real-life experiences and poems. She explained that the lyrics are “100% me,” and that they come from a personal place, including the loss of her father at a young age, which inspired her song “How Was I Supposed to Know?”

According to Billboard, Xania Monet is the “first known AI artist to earn enough radio airplay to debut on a Billboard radio chart,” appearing on at least five Billboard charts since her first song release. This achievement has sparked both amazement and controversy in the music industry, with some questioning the use of AI in creative spaces.

The Song-Making Process

Jones outlined her song-making process, which involves scrolling through her list of poems to find inspiration. She then uses an AI music-generator app, adding prompts such as slow tempo R&B, female soulful vocals, light guitar, and heavy drums, before clicking create. This process has led to the creation of chart-topping songs, including “How Was I Supposed to Know?”

Jones views Xania Monet as an extension of herself, stating, “Xania is an extension of me, so I look at her as a real person.” She believes that AI is a tool, like an instrument, and that it’s the new era of music. Jones doesn’t consider using AI as a shortcut, but rather as a way to mix her love of music with technology.

Backlash and Support

Not everyone is a fan of Xania Monet, with some artists, like Grammy-nominated Kehlani, speaking out against the use of AI in creative spaces. Kehlani expressed her concerns in a TikTok video, stating that “nobody will be able to justify AI to me” and that she doesn’t respect it. However, Jones remains unfazed, stating that everyone is entitled to their own opinion and that she still loves Kehlani’s music.

Hallwood Media, the company behind Xania Monet’s multi-million dollar recording deal, has defended the artist, stating that she represents a new age of music. Danny Jacobson, the head of A&R at Hallwood Media, said, “What Nikki has done with Xania Monet really represents the future of music… AI is breaking down barriers around age, image, and access, giving creators who might not have had a traditional path into the industry the chance to bring their stories and ideas to life while connecting directly with listeners.”

Addressing Concerns and Celebrating Success

Jones addressed concerns that AI could allow people to make music from racial or cultural backgrounds they may not be a part of, stating, “That’s what I’m here to let them know, I’m Telisha. I’m a part of your culture; I’m a Black woman; I’m a creator; I’m an entrepreneur; I created Xania.” Xania Monet’s success has proven that AI can be a powerful tool in the music industry, and Jones is proud to be at the forefront of this new era.
