Guidelines for Placing Obituaries in the Pioneer Press

To place an obituary in the Pioneer Press, please follow the guidelines outlined below. It is essential to include all necessary information to ensure timely and accurate publication. The Pioneer Press requires that obituaries be submitted via email to obits@pioneerpress.com, as there is currently no option to place them through the website.

For any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the obituary desk at 651-228-5263. The team is available to assist with the process and provide guidance on the necessary steps to take.

General Information Required

To initiate the process, the following general information is required: full name, address (including city, state, and zip code), phone number, and an alternate phone number if applicable. This information is crucial for the Pioneer Press to verify the obituary and ensure that it is published correctly.

Obituary Specifications

The following details are necessary for the obituary itself: the name of the deceased, the obituary text, and a photo in JPEG or PDF format (although TIF and other file types are also accepted). Additionally, the desired ad run dates must be specified, and it is essential to note that there are discounts available for running the obituary on multiple days. However, to qualify for this discount, the obituary must be scheduled on the first run date.

Policies and Verification

The Pioneer Press has a strict policy of verifying the death of the individual before publishing the obituary. To facilitate this, the name and phone number of the funeral home or cremation society handling the arrangements are required. The Pioneer Press must contact the funeral home or cremation society during their business hours to confirm the death. Alternatively, a death certificate can be accepted for verification purposes.

Guestbook and Outside Websites

The Pioneer Press does not allow references to other media sources with guestbooks or obituaries placed elsewhere. However, a website for a funeral home or a family email for contact can be included in the obituary. For any questions regarding this policy, please contact the obituary desk.

Obituary Process and Payment

Once the submission is complete, the Pioneer Press will fax or email a proof for review prior to publication. This proof includes the price and the scheduled publication dates. It is crucial to review the proof carefully and notify the Pioneer Press of any errors or changes before the deadline. Pre-payment is required for all obituary notices, and payment can be made by credit card over the phone or by EFT (electronic funds transfer). The minimum charge for an obituary is $162 for the first 12 lines, with each additional line costing $12.

Deadlines and Rates

The Pioneer Press has strict deadlines for obituary submissions, which vary depending on the day of the week. For Monday to Friday, the deadline is 4:30 PM for next-day publication, while on Saturdays, the deadline is 1:30 PM for Sunday publication. The Pioneer Press is closed on Sundays. The rates for obituaries are as follows: the minimum charge is $162 for the first 12 lines, with each additional line costing $12. Discounts are available for running the obituary on multiple days, and for obituaries with more than 40 lines.

Memoriam Requests

Memoriam submissions are remembrances of a loved one who has passed and have different rates than obituaries. For more information on memoriam submissions, please call 651-228-5280 or email memoriams@pioneerpress.com. The Pioneer Press is available to assist with memoriam requests from Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and is closed on weekends and holidays.

For more information on the guidelines and policies outlined above, please visit the Pioneer Press website or contact the obituary desk directly. The Pioneer Press is committed to providing accurate and timely publication of obituaries and memoriam submissions. Here
