The Devastating Consequences of the Government Shutdown
The United States government shutdown has reached a historic milestone, with no end in sight. The Republican leadership claims that the Democrats could have easily avoided this situation and can still end it with a “clean, nonpartisan funding extension.” However, this claim is far from the truth. The shutdown has already had severe consequences, including the loss of benefits from the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), also known as food stamps, for millions of people.
As of Saturday, an estimated 16 million children among the 42 million people receiving food aid under SNAP were affected by the cuts. This is a heartbreaking reality, as many of these individuals rely on food banks to meet their minimum nutritional needs. The average monthly benefit of $187 per person is already insufficient, and the loss of this support will exacerbate the struggles of those who are already struggling to make ends meet.
The Origin of the Shutdown
The shutdown is a result of a deeply entrenched partisan divide, with the Republican leadership insisting on a “clean continuing resolution” that would settle the question of healthcare for tens of millions of Americans later. However, this approach is not feasible, as the 22 million Americans who buy health insurance through the Affordable Care Act’s marketplaces will lose federal subsidies at the end of the year unless Congress acts. This would result in a doubling of their annual premiums, from $888 to $1,904.
The Republicans’ One Big, Beautiful Bill Act, passed in July, did not provide for the continuation of these subsidies. Instead, it included Medicaid cuts that would cause an estimated 10 million people to lose their insurance by 2034. These cuts were used to fund tax cuts primarily benefiting high-income individuals, with 60% of the benefits going to taxpayers with annual incomes over $217,000 and a third going to those with incomes over $460,000.
A Fight Over Healthcare and Health Insurance
The current shutdown is a continuation of the fight over access to healthcare and health insurance that has been ongoing for the past 15 years. The Affordable Care Act has been an enormous success, with 44 million people now enrolled through the marketplaces and Medicaid expansion. However, the Republicans have consistently tried to repeal it, and now they are attempting to dismantle it piece by piece.
The consequences of this fight are a matter of life and death. It is estimated that tens of thousands of people would die annually as a result of the loss of health insurance. To avert these deaths, significant reversals of the cuts in the future will be necessary. The shutdown has also led to a cruel and high-stakes fight over SNAP benefits, which Republicans have been cutting for years.
A federal judge recently ordered the Trump administration to fully fund SNAP benefits for this month, but the administration is refusing, leaving millions of people without access to food assistance. This is indefensible, and it is essential to understand the cause of the shutdown and its consequences to hold those responsible accountable.
