Maryland Gov. Wes Moore says “we’re not going to sit down on our palms as a result of Donald Trump tells us to” on redistricting

Maryland Redistricting Efforts Spark Debate

Maryland Governor Wes Moore has come under scrutiny for his recent decision to form a redistricting committee, aimed at potentially eliminating the state’s single Republican-held congressional seat. In a televised interview on “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan,” Moore defended his actions, stating that he doesn’t see why Maryland should “play by a different set of rules” than other states, such as Texas, Florida, or Ohio.

Moore’s comments come in response to criticism from Republicans and some Democrats, who argue that the redistricting effort is an attempt to gain an unfair advantage in the state’s congressional representation. However, Moore maintains that his goal is to ensure that Maryland is not at a disadvantage compared to other states that are also engaging in redistricting efforts. He cited the example of California’s Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom, who recently pushed a successful ballot measure to redraw the state’s congressional districts, potentially gaining up to five seats for Democrats.

A Bipartisan Commission

The redistricting committee, chaired by U.S. Senator Angela Alsobrooks, a close ally of Moore’s, is comprised of a bipartisan group of officials, including Senate President Bill Ferguson, Maryland House Speaker Adrienne A. Jones, former Attorney General Brian Frosh, and Cumberland Mayor Raymond Morriss. According to Maryland law, congressional maps are typically drawn by the state Assembly, where Democrats hold a supermajority. However, Moore would need to call a special session of the Assembly to move forward with the redistricting effort.

Despite the bipartisan composition of the committee, not all Democrats are on board with the redistricting plan. Senate President Ferguson has expressed opposition to the effort, citing the potential risks and uncertainties associated with mid-cycle redistricting. Ferguson has argued that the current map is already favorable to Democrats and that attempting to redraw the districts could backfire and result in the loss of seats.

A Matter of Democracy

Moore, however, remains committed to the redistricting effort, framing it as a matter of preserving democracy. He emphasized that “fighting for democracy is never risky” and that he will not allow former President Donald Trump to dictate Maryland’s actions. Moore’s comments reflect the increasingly partisan nature of redistricting efforts across the country, with both Democrats and Republicans seeking to gain an advantage in congressional representation.

As the debate over redistricting continues, it remains to be seen how the situation will unfold in Maryland. With the state’s congressional map already heavily favoring Democrats, it is unclear whether the redistricting effort will ultimately succeed in eliminating the single Republican-held seat.
