Introduction to Moorpark College’s Teaching Zoo
Moorpark College’s Animal Care and Training Program is a unique and hands-on educational experience that provides students with the opportunity to work with a diverse range of animals. The program, which is one of only two of its kind in the country, is based at the college’s Teaching Zoo, a five-acre facility that is home to over 120 animals representing 110 species.
The zoo is not only a place of learning for students but also a popular destination for visitors, with over 150 students applying to the program each year. The program’s focus on hands-on training and animal care has made it an attractive option for those looking to pursue a career in zoology, conservation, or animal training.
Hands-on Training and Animal Care
The program’s hands-on approach to animal care and training is what sets it apart from other educational institutions. Students are responsible for the daily care of the animals, including feeding, cleaning, and providing enrichment activities. This hands-on experience provides students with the skills and knowledge necessary to pursue a career in animal care and training.
One of the unique aspects of the program is the opportunity for students to work with a variety of animals, including carnivores, herbivores, birds, and primates. This diverse range of species provides students with a broad understanding of animal behavior and care, preparing them for a career in zoology, conservation, or animal training.
